Monitoring Heat Stress & Heat Index Alert System

Modified on Thu, 31 Jul at 6:21 AM

Working in high-heat environments brings significant health risks, particularly heat stress, which can impair decision-making, reduce physical performance, and even lead to serious medical conditions. The SOL-X SmartWatch is equipped with a powerful Heat Index Monitor that helps seafarers and offshore personnel stay alert and protected in such conditions.

How It Works

The Heat Index is calculated using a combination of ambient temperature and humidity levels, both of which are measured by the SmartWatch’s onboard sensors. When the heat index reaches high-risk levels, the system triggers a visual and vibration-based alert on the watch.

Key features:

  • Real-time alerts when dangerous heat conditions are detected

  • Hydration prompts to reduce the risk of heat injuries

  • Continuous monitoring that resets once safe levels are restored

Understanding the Alert Flow

The system is designed to recognize prolonged exposure to high-heat environments:

  • If the heat index stays in Zone A (dangerous) for over 45 minutes, a 1st alert is triggered.

  • If high readings continue, and there is no sufficient cooldown, a 2nd alert is issued after additional sustained exposure.

  • A built-in recovery timer resets the alert logic when the environment becomes cooler and humidity/temperature readings drop.

This step-wise logic ensures that alerts are meaningful and not caused by short-term fluctuations.

About Sensor Sensitivity

Sensor accuracy can be influenced by:

  • Proximity to the skin (user body heat)

  • PPE (e.g. boiler suits)

  • Transitions between hot and cold environments

For example, even after moving to a cooler space, the body may still radiate residual heat that temporarily keeps the reading high. This is normal, and users are encouraged to hydrate and rest accordingly.

Note: The humidity sensor is located on the side of the watch. If it becomes wet, it may give temporarily high readings.
